Seized Cap Removal

 

 

 

The issue of seized thread protection and pressure retaining caps on corrosion monitoring access fittings is an increasing problem. Furthermore, the requirement to replace thread protection covers with the pressure retaining type has; of late, become industry ‘best practice’.

Where caps are seized, this prevents the use of the access fitting for installation and servicing of corrosion monitoring devices. This in turn, can result in loss of monitoring data from critical systems and sub-standard servicing of installed devices (I.e. seals not changed on plugs regularly).

Historical methods to remove seized caps have been both time consuming and primitive in nature. (I.e. hand saws or using heat) It has become common practice to consider costly replacements of complete spool sections or flanged access fittings in order to reinstate monitoring or ensure the access fitting has the appropriate pressure retaining cap installed (providing a secondary solution).

Working in tandem, ICR Group companies NECE and Moss have developed an innovative solution for cap removal which is both efficient and safe allowing many caps to be removed in a short space of time.
